The Eagles (#1 seed) captured their seventh consecutive section 5AA title and competed in the 2019 AA Wrestling Team State Tournament on February 28, at the Xcel Energy Center. Congratulations to our wrestlers on their exciting season and sixth place state finish.

Senior Jake Svihel (126) and junior Joey Thompson (113) captured state titles in their weight class.

Congratulations to Wrestling Individual State Tournament qualifiers Joey Thompson, Jake Svihel, Bryce Erckenbrack, William Jaeger, Adam Sylvester, Anthony Arens, Jake Ranning, Joe Hinkle. Michael Loger. Our Eagles will compete on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2, at the Xcel Energy Center.

At the March 4 morning convocation, our community recognized and celebrated our state wrestling champions, Joey Thompson '20 and Jake Svihel '19 Athletic Director Mike Smith shared the following during the presentation this morning...

To be good at this sport is an accomplishment. To be good enough to qualify for the state tournament is outstanding. For these two guys, they are the BEST! The best in their sport, at their weight, in the state. That is amazing! These guys understand commitment. These guys understand sacrifice. These guys understand hard work and perseverance.

State Champion Joey Thompson finishes the season with a record of 51-2. Of his 51 victories, 20 of them were pins and 15 were tech falls. He set a school record with 78 near falls this season. At this point, his career record is 161-18. He is a two-time state champion and has been named a Fargo All American.

State Champion Jake Svihel finishes this season with a record of 57-0 (state record) and 37 of his wins were pins (school record). He had 333 takedowns this season (school record) and 1090 career takedowns (school record). He finishes his career with a record of 227-35. Jake is a five time state entrant, a three time state runner up, and he finishes his high school career by winning a state championship!

Eagle Accomplishments

Senior wrestler Jake Svihel secured his 200th TG career win on January 23. Jake received an athletic scholarship to Wyoming to further his education and wrestle at the collegiate level.

Eagle wrestling coach Doug Svihel achieved win number 450 on January 17. Coach Svihel is in his 30th year leading our wrestling program and is currently our longest serving coach.

A number of Eagle wrestlers were recognized for their academic accomplishments. Congratulations to Section 5AA All Academic Team Award recipients from TG: Jake Svihel, Bryce Erkenbrack, William Jaeger, Adam Sylvester, Jake Ranning and Joe Hinkle!
