Tackling the Catholic Faith

Former NFL center Matt Birk will share his journey of growing up Catholic, falling away in college (and beyond), and how football actually saved his life.  Matt’s not a catechist - he’s a lineman.  He breaks down the fundamentals of the Faith in a way that anyone can understand and put into practice.

About the Presenter:

An unlikely NFL success story, Matt Birk’s journey began from humble beginnings in St. Paul. The “last kid picked” for everything, Birk developed a love for all sports in spite of his lack of natural talent. He decided to try football in the 10th grade at Cretin-Derham Hall High School, and his life was forever changed. Birk went on to attend Harvard University, earning a degree in economics. Thinking he would head to Wall Street and put his degree to good use, the Minnesota Vikings altered Birk’s career plans by selecting him in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft. After seeing very little playing time his first two seasons, Birk became the starting center in 2000. That year, and on five other occasions during his 11 seasons with the purple, Birk was named to the Pro Bowl. In 2002, Matt and his wife, Adrianna, started the HIKE (Hope, Inspiration, Knowledge, Education) Foundation with the aim of providing educational opportunities to at-risk youth. For his community efforts, Birk was named the Minnesota Vikings Community Man of the Year seven times. In 2009, Birk left Minnesota for the Baltimore Ravens via free agency. In 2011, Birk was named the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year, recognized for excellence on the field and in the community. That year, over 100,000 kids in Maryland participated in HIKE Foundation programs. In 2013, Birk played in his last NFL game -- a 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII. Since retirement, Birk has served in a number of capacities for the NFL League Office. Currently a Special Advisor, Matt’s work focuses on growing the game at the youth and high school levels. He sits on the Board of Directors for USA Football and the advisory council of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Game for Life Academy. Matt believes strongly in football and its ability to have a profound impact in young peoples’ lives. Matt co-authored a book -- “All-Pro Wisdom: The 7 Choices That Lead to Greatness”-- that went immediately to the top of Amazon’s best seller list. In the book, Matt shares many life lessons he learned during his football career which can be applied to everyday life. Matt speaks throughout the country on a variety of topics, including his Catholic faith and advocating for the unborn. The Birks live in Mendota Heights with their eight children.
