Teddy Bear Toss on December 16

On Saturday, December 16, the Totino-Grace boys hockey program will partner with opponent Champlin Park for a Teddy Bear Toss during the first intermission of their varsity match up. Attendees are encouraged to bring a teddy bear in a clear plastic bag (extras will be on hand) to toss onto the ice. Children's Hospital will receive all donations. Bears will also be available for purchase for a good will donation of $10 for two bears. Each bear brought or purchased will provide the donor an opportunity to be entered into a drawing for exciting prizes donated by local businesses. Join us at Champlin Ice Forum on Saturday, December 16, for this exciting match up and awesome fundraiser for Children's Hospital.

The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

TG Welcomes New Head Boys Hockey Coach

Totino-Grace warmly welcomes Brian Murphy as the new head coach for the boys hockey program. Brian played high school hockey at Cretin-Derham Hall where he was a three year letterman, was voted all conference and participated in the Great 8 Festival for the top seniors in the state his senior year. He played post high school for the Danville Wings (NAHL) and at St. Mary’s University in Winona, MN.

Brian followed his passion for hockey coaching and scouting players at every level. In the last 15 years Murphy has been both an Assistant and Head coach at the bantam level, both Minnesota AA and USA Tier 1. He has also served as an assistant for Greg Vannelli at St. Paul Academy and in junior hockey for both the Albert Lea Thunder of the North American Hockey League as well as the and Owatonna Express.

In addition to coaching for the last 15 years, Brian has been a scout for the teams in the USHL and the Washington Capitals in the NHL. He was also chosen to coach in the Minnesota High Performance Program League and the MN Bantam Elite League in the off season.

The past five seasons Coach Murphy led the Minnetonka Bantam AA team. Besides winning two consecutive state titles in  2015 and 2016, Minnetonka defeated Tier 1 national championship teams Shattuck-St. Mary’s and the Chicago Mission in consecutive years.

Brian shares, "I am honored to be chosen to represent the Totino-Grace Community and Eagle hockey.  I am grateful for the opportunity of continuing Your tradition of developing exceptional student athletes in all aspects of life, and very excited to get started."

Program Overview

Totino-Grace has two boys hockey teams, varsity and junior varsity.  Each team has between 17 and 20 players.  There are approximately 40 players in the program with the varsity having primarily juniors and seniors and the JV consisting of mostly sophomores and freshmen.

Tryouts are in mid-November, are free of cost, and open to any hockey player at TG. Typically, 45-60 players participate in the tryout.  Players are chosen for our teams on the basis of hockey ability and attitude and must also be academically eligible.  We stress the importance of academics for our hockey players and are very proud of the fact that we have won the Section Academic Award for the highest team G.P.A. seven times with a team average of over 3.4 each year.

Totino-Grace is a member of the Northwest Suburban Conference which includes: Irondale, Anoka, Blaine, Maple Grove, Centennial, Spring Lake Park, Osseo.  Both our teams play a normal 25-game schedule, plus additional scrimmages.  Most of our players are A-Traveling players from the surrounding communities.  We also have a few players who were never given the opportunity to play at the A level, and instead played at the B level.  Some TG players have success at our school but would have never played at their area high school due to an abundance of interested players; they likely would not have had an opportunity to make a varsity team.  Because our numbers are smaller at TG, we can give these players the opportunity they deserve.

Totino-Grace has a summer hockey camp and all incoming freshmen are encouraged to attend.  Information is available on the Totino-Grace website in the spring.
