Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Posted January 4, 2010

Totino-Grace High School has put into place an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program to make early defibrillation immediately available in cardiac emergencies. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can happen anywhere, anytime. SCA is usually caused by an electrical malfunction that makes the heart quiver ineffectively. CPR alone is not enough. It is a temporary measure that helps maintain blood flow to the brain. A lifesaving pulse of electricity-defibrillation-is the only treatment and must be delivered quickly to restore the heart’s normal rhythm.

Because every minute counts when sudden cardiac arrest strikes, Totino-Grace High School has placed a Medtronic CR Plus Fully Automatic AED in an enclosed case in the Commons just outside the main Gymnasium. In addition, a portable AED will be on site for athletic events hosted by Totino-Grace High School. We also have established a Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) consisting of faculty and staff members who are specially trained and certified in CPR/AED use through the American Heart Association.

We are grateful to have this type of medical technology on campus to help ensure the health and safety of both our students and faculty members.
