Candidate Selection Process
Junior students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.6 or higher at the end of first semester are eligible for membership in NHS. Shortly after first semester grades are calculated, eligible students will receive a letter regarding NHS membership.
Besides scholarship, three other areas are central to NHS membership: character, leadership, and service. Eligible students will be responsible for obtaining verification of their achievement in these three areas. Listed below are the guidelines for submitting an application for membership in NHS at Totino-Grace.
1.) APPLICATION ESSAY:
Using specific examples, illustrations, or reasons, students eligible for NHS will describe their qualifications in all four areas.
CONTENT: Writing in the first person (I/me), students will introduce themselves and write a clear, coherent essay, describing their achievement in each area.
LENGTH: The essay will be 250-500 words.
SUBMISSION: The typed, double-spaced essay, with student name a the top, should be attached to the Signature Sheet.
2.) SIGNATURE SHEET
Using the form provided by NHS, a coach, administrator, teacher, staff member, or other adult who knows the student will confirm the statements in the student essay. The signature verifies that the person signing has read the essay and has personal knowledge of the student’s qualification in a specific area.
NOTE:
• The person signing may not be a parent or guardian
• If outside the TG community, the person signing should list title or relation to the student, as well as a phone number where he/she can be reached.
3.) STUDENT INFORMATION FORM
Using blue or black pen, candidates will print the required information.
The NHS Faculty Council, made up of TG faculty and staff will review the three documents each student submits. Using criteria in National Honor Society Handbook, 15th ed., the Faculty Council will make final decisions on NHS membership.
In February, students will be notified of their 3.6 cumulative average and invited to apply for membership.
To be considered for NHS, students must meet the deadline for turning in all three (3) documents.
The 2009-2010 deadline is Friday, February 26th, 2010.
Any eligible junior who applies to NHS but is not accepted may reapply in the fall of his/her senior year. The deadline for reapplication will be the last Friday of September. Only those seniors who were eligible at the end of first semester their junior year and applied for membership but were not accepted may reapply in the fall.
