CLASS DESCRIPTION: Designed for next fall's seniors, the class offers students tips and strategies for each subject area, time to apply the strategies using practice exercises and tests, and two days of intense review and practice.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS and the PERSONAL NARRATIVE
Seniors and Underclassmen: Take Your Essay-Writing to the Next Level! 

CLASS DESCRIPTION: In the college application, some colleges will give a set of prompts or questions, while others will simply instruct applicants to "write a personal statement." The Personal Statement/Personal Narrative can be difficult, the seemingly infinite number of possibilities, daunting. This four-day class can help a student write/revise/polish the College Application Essay. Underclassmen should take this course if they are looking for a chance to improve writing skills. It can be a painless - even fun - way to discover voice and personal style.

ACT ESSAY-WRITING COURSE  
A Three-Hour Course for Seniors Wanting A Head Start on their College Application Essay

CLASS DESCRIPTION: The ACT includes an optional Writing Test (30-minute persuasive essay) which many colleges recommend or require. In this course, students learn a strategy which encourages their ability to think, develop concrete examples, and write well under pressure. As part of the course, students have the unique option of meeting one-on-one with the instructor after they receive their ACT test results. Together, they will review the actual test essay and ACT Reader comments.

When is the ACT Exam offered?

A

When is the next TG ACT Prep Course?

A

Late February (for the April and June Exams). More information will be available in the school e-newsletters and on the ACT Prep Course webpage.

Will there be a summer ACT Prep Course?

A

In late July there will be a course for senior students who have already taken the exam and hope to improve their scores.

What is the ACT Prep Course curriculum?

A

The first class offers a brief diagnostic test and general introduction to the ACT as well as to Totino-Grace’s college planning tools and resources.

The next four classes focus on one section of the exam: English, Math, Reading, or Science. Students learn strategies and subject-specific tips, then apply them to sample problems or passages in the course text.

The final class is a half-exam which allows students to measure their progress and develop a plan for strengthening the areas where they are still challenged.

On March 31 or April 12, past and current ACT Prep students may attend a free Strategy Review. The two-hour class offers extra review and practice time for each subject area.

What about the timed ACT Essay?

A

Students interested in focusing on their timed essay-writing skills may take a separate course, offered in March.

Does the class work miracles?

A

Students who attend the six classes and the March Strategy Review Sessions, then apply the strategies in text work on their own, believe it does.

Students who choose not to use the text for practicing strategies learned in the course believe it does not.

Who should take this course?

A

Students who lack time or motivation to prepare independently have found this course a confidence-building introduction to the ACT.

Students who are independent and self-motivated learners benefit from the strategies taught and practiced in the ACT Prep Course.
